<image:title>Blog - Parenting Through Cancer: How to Hold Your Kids and Yourself at the Same Time - There's a particular kind of exhaustion that comes with hearing the word cancer when you have children. It isn't just the appointments, the scans, the waiting rooms, the paperwork. It's that you don't get to stop being a parent while any of it happens. There's no pause button. The lunches still need packing, the socks still go missing, somebody still has to sit on the floor and play dinosaurs even though you've been awake since 4 a.m. worrying. If you're reading this from inside that double shift, I want you to know two things up front.</image:title>
<image:caption>First: you are not failing at this. Second: you don't have to choose between being a patient and being a parent. You can be both, imperfectly, and it can still be enough.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Parenting Through Cancer: How to Hold Your Kids and Yourself at the Same Time - Age Appropriate Conversation Tips</image:title>
<image:caption>There's no script that works for every kid, but there are general developmental guideposts: Ages 3–6: Keep it short, concrete, and about now. "Mummy has a sickness called cancer. The doctors are helping. Sometimes I'll be tired, and sometimes someone else will pick you up from daycare." They mostly need to know their world is still safe and their routine still holds. Ages 7–11: They can handle a bit more detail and will ask practical questions. "What is chemo? Does it hurt? Will you lose your hair?" Answer honestly and simply. This is also the age where kids start to help — and feeling useful genuinely helps them. Ages 12+: Teens can handle the real picture, including uncertainty. Loop them in on schedules and what's changing. And expect them to have big feelings that show up sideways — as irritability, withdrawal, or sudden independence. That's not them pulling away from you. That's them coping. Regardless of age: tell them who they can talk to, and give them permission to ask anything, anytime — including questions you don't have answers to.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Parenting Through Cancer: How to Hold Your Kids and Yourself at the Same Time - Lower the bar without dropping it</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the practical stuff, and it matters more than it sounds. When your energy is a limited resource, you have to spend it like one. Ask yourself each morning: what are the three things that actually have to happen today? Everything else is optional. Frozen pizza for dinner is not a failure of parenting. It's strategy. A few things that help: Batch the invisible labour. Grocery orders, laundry, school forms — hand them off or automate them. Say yes to specific offers. "Let me know if you need anything" is hard to answer. "Can you take Theo to soccer on Thursday?" is easy. Keep a running list on your phone so you have an answer ready. Let the kids see the system. A whiteboard calendar, a shared family app, a colour-coded week — kids cope better when they can see what's coming. Protect one non-negotiable. One ritual, one hour, one thing that stays sacred no matter what. It anchors everyone.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog - Parenting Through Cancer: How to Hold Your Kids and Yourself at the Same Time - Your own feelings are allowed too</image:title>
<image:caption>Parents in treatment often get so focused on protecting their kids that they forget they're also a person going through something enormous. You're allowed to grieve. Allowed to be scared. Allowed to be furious that this happened to you, right now, in this season of your life. Allowed to feel relief about things you didn't expect to feel relief about. Grief and gratitude share the same space. That's not a contradiction — that's being alive. It’s an opportunity too. Children need to see what safe adults do when they have “big feelings”. Hiding and pretending take away a powerful parenting tool: the ability to show kids that feelings are normal and the appropriate way you’re going to deal with it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why Mainstream Parenting Advice Can Alienate Neurodivergent Families - The Co-Regulation Myth vs. Sensory Overload The modern standard dictates that if your child is dysregulated, you must be their "anchor." But what happens when the child’s meltdown is a direct, violent sensory trigger for the parent?</image:title>
<image:caption>The Auditory Wall: An autistic parent with sound sensitivity cannot easily "co-regulate" with a child who has been screaming at a high pitch for 45 minutes. The noise triggers a physical, primal fight-or-flight response in the parent's nervous system. The Overstimulated Parent: Neurodivergent parents hit sensory overload far faster than neurotypical adults. When a parent is experiencing tactile and auditory overstimulation, the textbook advice to "draw them close and hold them" can push the parent straight into an autistic meltdown or an ADHD rage cycle. The advice entirely ignores a brutal physical reality: You cannot pour regulation into a child from an empty, overstimulated nervous system. The Secondary Mask: Forcing the Perfect Parent Avatar Neurodivergent adults spent their entire childhoods "masking"—hiding their true autistic or ADHD traits to fit into a neurotypical world. Modern parenting advice inadvertently demands a secondary, deeply exhausting layer of masking: The Perfect Parent Mask PARENT EXPERIENCES SENSORY OVERLOAD / EXECUTIVE DYSFUNCTION ———>. PARENT "MASKS" INTERNAL CRISIS TO FORCE A CALM GENTLE PARENT TONE ———> NERVOUS SYSTEM REBLOWS: INTERNAL PRESSURE TRIGGERS AN EXPLOSION ———> EXPERT VIDEOS SAY "IF YOU YELL, YOU DAMAGE THEM" ———> DEEP SHAME . Rinse. Repeat. When a parent inevitably snaps because their brain is physically overwhelmed, the parenting expert community is waiting with highly shaming rhetoric. Phrases like "Your child's brain is permanently altered by your anger" or "If you can't control yourself, how can they?" plunge neurodivergent parents into profound despair. They are left feeling like their actual neurology makes them fundamentally unfit to raise children.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why Mainstream Parenting Advice Can Alienate Neurodivergent Families - The Partner Strain: Mixed-Neurology Disconnects</image:title>
<image:caption>When one parent is neurodivergent and the other is neurotypical, online parenting advice acts as a direct wedge in the relationship. Because mainstream scripts are built around a neurotypical baseline, they quickly become a weapon of resentment. The "Why Can't You Just..." Trap: A neurotypical partner, consuming the same online advice, might look at their neurodivergent spouse and wonder why they can’t "just stay calm" or "just stick to the schedule." They misinterpret neurological overstimulation or ADHD executive dysfunction as a lack of effort, laziness, or poor emotional control. The Resentment Loop: The neurodivergent parent feels deeply judged, misunderstood, and micromanaged in their own home. Meanwhile, the neurotypical parent feels burnt out, carrying what they perceive as the heavy lifting of keeping the family stable, organized, and "gentle." Weaponized Scripts: In a mixed-neurology relationship, parenting philosophies are easily weaponized during arguments. A neurodivergent parent who needs to walk away to avoid an explosive sensory meltdown might be accused of "stonewalling" or "abandoning" the child, when they are actually trying to keep everyone safe.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Why Mainstream Parenting Advice Can Alienate Neurodivergent Families - Escaping the Trap: Neuro-Affirming Standards</image:title>
<image:caption>To break out of this trap, neurodivergent parents must completely reject neurotypical parenting benchmarks and build a framework that honors their own brain wiring: Prioritize Your Sensory Needs First: Sensory tools are not just for kids. If your child is melting down, put on high-quality loop earplugs or noise-canceling headphones before you approach them. Reducing the auditory assault is the only way to keep your prefrontal cortex online. Ditch the Scripts: You do not need to deliver a flawless, three-sentence validation monologue. If you are too overwhelmed to speak, use a simple, low-demand phrase: "I'm here. We are safe." Silence is a highly valid parenting strategy. Normalize "Parallel Regulation": If you cannot co-regulate without exploding, create physical space. Say, "Mom/Dad is too overwhelmed by this noise. I need to step into the kitchen for two minutes to calm my body. I will be right back." This teaches your child an invaluable, authentic lesson in boundary-setting and self-care. Co-Create a "Safeword" with Your Partner: In a mixed-neurology partnership, establish a zero-judgment safety phrase. If a parent says "I’m redlining" or "I'm at a level 10," the other partner immediately steps in to take over the situation—no questions asked, and no lectures on "staying calm" later. Build an Airtight Boundary for Advice: Prepare a script for grandparents and well-meaning friends to shut down unsolicited advice instantly: "I know you love us and want to help, but our brains work a bit differently and we have a specific plan with our care team. I just need you to be a grandparent/friend right now, not a coach." Lower the Operational Bar: On high-symptom days, let go of curated meals, strict routines, or educational play. Survival, basic physical safety, and keeping the lights low are perfectly acceptable benchmarks. Your children do not need a robotic, hyper-regulated expert avatar. They need an authentic parent who recognizes their own limits, honors their unique neurology, and models how a real human being navigates a noisy world.Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference. Let’s drop the mask and build our own community support.</image:caption>
